Operational Data, Logs, Alarms & Trend Recognition
This course teaches operators how to turn routine operating information into useful decisions. It covers clear log entries, distinguishing observations from assumptions, reviewing alarms in context, comparing current readings with historical conditions, recognizing sudden and gradual trends, and documenting actions taken. Students work through practical examples involving process values, equipment status, alarms, and shift-to-shift communication.
What you’ll learn
- Identify the characteristics of a useful and defensible operational log entry.
- Explain why an alarm should be evaluated together with process conditions, equipment status, and recent operator actions.
- Recognize common patterns in operational data, including sudden changes, gradual drift, repeated cycling, and persistent deviation.
- Distinguish an observation from an assumption or unsupported conclusion.
- Document an operational response so the next operator can understand what occurred, what was done, and what still requires attention.
